The Swedish Hockey League (SHL), formerly known as the Elitserien, is the highest level of professional ice hockey in Sweden. The league consists of 14 teams that play a regular season of 52 games. The top eight teams in the regular season standings qualify for the playoffs, which are held in a single-elimination format. The winner of the playoffs is crowned the Swedish Hockey League champion.
The SHL is one of the strongest hockey leagues in Europe, and it has produced a number of NHL stars over the years. Some of the most famous NHL players from Sweden include Mats Sundin, Peter Forsberg, and Henrik Lundqvist.
